PE - Health and Wellbeing


Learning in Health and Wellbeing ensures that children and young people develop the knowledge and understanding, skills, capabilities and attributes which they need for mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing now and in the future .Learning through health and wellbeing enable children and young people to:

  • Make informed decisions in order to improve their mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing.
  • Experience challenge and enjoyment
  • Experience positive aspects of healthy living and activity for themselves
  • Apply their mental, emotional, social and physical skills to pursue a healthy lifestyle
  • Make a successful move to the next stage of education or work
  • Establish a pattern of health and wellbeing which will be sustained into adult life, and which will help to promote the health and wellbeing of the next generation of Scottish children. It also enables some to perform at high levels in sport or prepare for careers within the health and leisure industries.


S3 Curriculum Course Outline

Will enable pupils to practice and develop skills, understand and apply structures and strategies, understand the principles that underline fitness development. Will enable pupils to develop in leadership situations and experience different roles in organising physical activity.


The S3 course will be split into four sections:

  • Fitness Development
  • Skill development
  • Structures and Strategies
  • Sport Education


Section 1 Fitness Development Block


The main elements of the Fitness block will be to understand the principles that underline the development of fitness. These will fall into three broad areas of understanding and assessment.

  • Performance
    • Focus will be on conditioning work in class to allow maximum participation in activity.
  • Understanding
    • Types and aspects of Fitness
    • Methods of training, principles of training
    • Goal setting
    • Understanding of how to test/monitor fitness levels
    • Understanding of Factors Impacting on Performance
  • Evaluating & Appreciating
    • Identify strengths and weaknesses
    • Experience training programmes – monitor progress, evaluate
    • effectiveness.

Prior learning will be through Health and Walling blocks in S1/S2. 

Possible cross curricular links Biology, Home Economics and PSE.



Section 2 Skill Development Block

The main outcome in The Skill Development block will be to demonstrate a range of basic performance in two activities. Skills should be performed with fluency, control good technique, correct tactics and decision making. These will fall into three broad areas of understanding and assessment. This block will take place after Easter and will work towards Nat 4/5 performance.

  • Performance
    • Focus will be on skill development, but, with plenty opportunity to practice skills in game/ performance situations.
  • Understanding
    • Knowledge of sub- routines in various skills
    • Methods of practice
    • Principles of practice
    • Goal – setting
  • Evaluating & Appreciating
    • Observing self/peer performance and report on findings
    • Positive feedback
    • Identify and act on areas for improvement
    • Monitor and evaluate progress.

Prior learning will be through activity blocks in CfE in S1/S2

Section 3 Sport Education Block

Throughout this block pupils will develop performance in a third activity as well as develop skills for life and skills for work. Sport Education allows the development of performance I a team game and leadership qualities. These will fall into three broad areas of understanding and assessment.

  • Performance
    • Focus will be on performance in one activity. Developing skill and application of tactics. This will be developed through team games
  • Understanding
    • Opportunity for pupils to organise sessions and lead groups
    • Scoring systems
    • Consideration of organisational issues when planning/delivering sessionsDevelop social skills cooperation communication
    • Understanding and developing of leadership skills
    • Factors Impacting Performance
  • Evaluating & Appreciating
    • Self and peer assessment of leadership situations
    • Positive feedback
    • Identify and act on areas for improvement

Prior learning will be through activity blocks in CfE in S1/S2 and Health and Wellbeing blocks in S1/S2.

Possible cross curricular links - Leadership skills and teamwork. 


Homework

Regular homework is expected of S3 pupils. Homework checks will be built into the course. In addition to this pupils will be working on completing any task not finished in class.


Progression

Pupils who complete the S3 CfE PE course may progress to National 4 or National 5 or Sports Leader Programme.
