Hearty Lives Update Sep 2014

back

The Hearty Lives Project has now entered it's second year and since the Launch Day in February 2014, it has been very busy.

Flames: Lighting the Way

Following the launch day, 15 S3 pupils were invited to get involved in the 'Flames' initiative. Selected pupils attended a training day with tutors from Loughborough University.  Following their training, the pupils worked with the Project Leader Susan McDonald, Project Coordinator Cheryl Thomas and Community Youth Worker Emma McCrystal to produce sessions to be delivered in our associated Primaries.  The pupils then visited each of the Primaries to deliver their sessions and inspire and motivate young people to be more active and lead a healthy lifestyle.

Some of these pupils have now decided to continue to work within the Hearty Lives Project and are now starting up a new club called Healthy Heroes.  This Club is aimed at all S1 and S2 pupils and will take place on Thursday lunchtimes.

As part of the promotion for this new club, the Smoothie Bike was in school recently.  Pupils were encouraged to choose some fruit to pop into the blender on the front of the bike and then cycle to blend their smoothie.

Linwood Parkour

This new club has been set up within St Benedict's High School.  The club was set up with the help of four S5 pupils who have been involved in Glasgow Parkour and wanted to bring Parkour to the their local area.  Coaches from Glasgow Parkour run the sessions. It is the first Parkour club in the area and is open to  young people who live or attend school in Linwood.  Sessions are on Tuesday evenings 6-7pm and 7-8pm and cost £2.50 per session.  Places are limited so booking is required by

Peer Educators

A number of pupils have volunteered to get involved in the Peer Educator Programme.  This initiative is open to 14-18 year old pupils.  The current group are now attending weekly sessions to learn about health and mentoring.  Following their training the pupils will embark on delivering a health promoting project within the school or community.  There may be future opportunities for pupils who are interested Peer Mentoring.  The Peer Education Programme has links with nationally recognised awards such as the Saltire Award.

Notice Board

There is now a large Hearty Lives Project notice board near to the pupils entrance to the school.  This is updated regularly with information and photos relating to the project.  Pupils are encouraged to view the notice board.

Contacts

Pupils who have questions about the project or wish to find out more about how they can get involved should speak to Mrs McCartney in the PE Department.
